I’ve put together this page to help you to buy bread making equipment online and with a guide to help you decide what equipment you need.
What equipment you need really depends on how much you bake bread at home and how often. So I’ve broken this guide down into three sections:
- Essential bread making tools and equipment
- Good to have bread making tools and equipment
- Next level bread making tools and equipment
Making the occasional loaf doesn’t require much equipment, just a few essential items, but if you’re looking to branch out into artisan baking such as sourdough’s you’re going to need a bit more.
For more information about bread making equipment and their uses, you may like to read ‘what equipment do you need to make bread‘
I only recommend products of good quality which will help you with bread making. Some links on this page may be affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you buy through the link, this is at no cost to you. See the privacy policy here.
Essential bread making tools and equipment
Essential bread making equipment is good for:
- Bread making beginners.
- Those who just want to make basic breads.
- Bakers with limited kitchen space.
Below are some of the essential items which you will need for bread-making at home:
Mixing bowls for bread making
Large mixing bowls are essential for bread making, they need to be large enough to mix the ingredients and then to rise the dough.
Keep in mind that the dough will double or even triple in volume so you will need to allow for this extra space. Metal is a good material for bread making because it conducts heat and helps the dough to rise at a steady temperature. Click on the links below to check mixing bowl prices at Amazon and Nisbets.

Digital scales
Making good homemade bread means getting the measurements right, so a good pair of digital scales is essential for every baker.
Try to go for a scale which is accurate when weighing small amounts which you need for salt, yeast and sugar and one which you can change from grams to mils etc. Salter are one of the best makes of digital scales and there are different versions available.

Bread/loaf tins
If you want to make loaf shaped bread, then you will need a bread tin for to bake your bread.
Loaf tins generally come in two sizes, 2lb (1KG) for a large loaf and 1lb for a small loaf. The best bread tins are those which have a non-stick coating which don’t rust. Metal tins are best for a crispy crust around the sides and underneath the loaf.

Baking trays/sheets
If you’re planning to make shaped loaves or rolls which need to be baked on a flat surface, then you will need a large baking tray or maybe a few smaller ones.
Again, try and go for a good quality metal tray which won’t go rusty if it’s scratched.

Measuring jug
A measuring jug is a really useful tool for home bread makers. You need to be able to measure water and in some cases oil and I find this is much easier using a jug with clear measurements on it.

Good to have bread making tools and equipment
Good to have bread making equipment is for bakers who are looking to take their bread making to the next level. Including products which can help you to get the best results and equipment which will make bread making easier.
Below are my recommended ‘good to have’ bread making tools and equipment recommendations:
Kenwood stand mixer with a dough hook
My Kenwood stand mixer with dough hook is one of my absolute favourite items in my bread making equipment kit. My mum bought it for me years ago, I use it every week and it just keeps on going.
This is a luxury item, but if you are a keen bread maker and you don’t have a stand mixer it’s definitely worth looking into.
Other brands are available, but I recommend the Kenwood for it’s quality and the fact they just keep on going.
A Kenwood stand mixer with dough hook has the power to mix the ingredients and then knead the bread, I love kneading by hand but sometimes if you’re not feeling up to it or you want to use a higher water ratio the dough hook will do all the work for you.
Click the links below to compare prices, Kenwood stand mixers are available in various models depending on power etc. The basic Kenwood model comes with a dough hook and two other attachments as standard.

Dough scraper
I was debating whether the dough hook should be in the essential section, for me it’s essential, but you can make do without one.
Dough scrapers are generally rounded and made from plastic, but you can also buy more ridged metal scrapers with a straight edge. Some also have measurements on the side so you can measure the length of the dough you’re cutting.
Plastic scrapers are better for scraping bowls, but the type you go for really depends what you want to use it for. They are also great for scraping surfaces and cutting dough.

Proving/proofing basket for sourdough
If you’re not intending to make sourdough bread, then you may want to skip the next few products.
A proving basket is a helpful tool for sourdoughs because it helps to keep the dough in a formed shape while it’s proving and prevents it from spreading.
The important thing to know about using a proving basket is that if you don’t line the basket and apply flour the dough will stick and collapse. Some baskets come with a liner, but you can also use a thin tea towel or a sheet of muslin.

Pizza Stone
If you make a lot of homemade pizza or you have a pizza oven then a pizza stone is worth investing in as part of your bread making kit..
The pizza stone helps to get extra heat into the oven by placing it in the oven before you switch it on. It also helps create a crispy pizza base and can be used for other types of breads to create the sam affect.

Ooni Pizza ovens
Take pizza making to the next level and impress your guests with a stylish Ooni Fyra Pizza Oven.
The oven is lightweight and fully portable so you can use it in the garden or take it camping.
This model is fed by wood pellets and can reach temperatures of 500°C or 932°F, perfect for cooking pizzas quickly which are full of flavour. Best of all it’s much more reasonable than many other pizza ovens at just £229 (at the time of writing).
If you’re considering investing in a pizza oven, you do need to use a pizza peel with a pizza oven due to to the intense temperature.
